Breckin, who worked alongside Rovers manager Ronnie Moore during the latter's managerial spell at Rotherham and Oldham, joins Moore from Oldham.

Breckin's appointment follows the departure of Rovers coach John McMahon to Shrewsbury Town, where he too has been named assistant manager.

McMahon replaces Leroy Rosenior who was named Brentford's new manager in June.
