Mathias has paid the price for a poor start by his side who are fifth from bottom of Division Two and have registered just one league win.

Kelham O'Hanlon has also been released from his contract as assistant manager and John McMahon will take temporary charge of the Prenton Park club.

"John McMahon will take temporary charge for Tuesday's match with Wycombe, and remain in a caretaker role until a permanent replacement is found," said a statement on Tranmere's official website.
