Striker Robbie Keane is to remain as Tottenham captain despite his role in a secret Christmas party in Dublin last week, BBC Sport understands.

Manager Harry Redknapp had threatened to "severely" punish the Spurs players that flew to Dublin for the party.

Instead the players involved in the trip have agreed to make an unspecified donation to an unnamed charity.

Redknapp, who had warned his players not to organise a party, spoke to his squad before training on Monday.

Prior to Monday's "amicable" meeting, newspaper reports had suggested the players could have been fined a total of £1m.

Spurs manager Redknapp had been unaware most of his squad went to Ireland four days before their 1-0 home defeat by Wolves on 12 December.

He had told them they should remain focused on their bid to finish in the top four of the Premier League and qualify for the Champions League.

On Saturday, Spurs won 2-0 away at Blackburn to leave them two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Republic of Ireland international Keane came on as a substitute in the victory at the weekend.

Prior to Saturday's success Redknapp had told BBC Radio 5 live that he would deal with the matter internally, saying, "Believe you me, it will be sorted out."
