Supporters sang Jol's name as they learnt his fate before he did |
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has admitted the club made mistakes with the departure of former coach Martin Jol. Jol was sacked after Thursday's Uefa Cup loss to Getafe but the news was leaked before the game and spread to media and fans as the match went on.
Levy told the Spurs website: "Several events clearly did not happen as we all would have wished and things could have been handled differently and better.
"But the first time we met to discuss his position was after the match."
A number of versions of the Dutchman's departure have been reported and Jol said that he found out his fate when his nephew told him in the tunnel after the game.
But Levy has attempted to put the record straight in an open letter to supporters.
"There were no discussions prior (to the game) and there were none of the reported disagreements," he added.

"We would not have, in any case, asked Martin to take charge of the match under those circumstances.
"Media speculation which preceded the game, inaccurately reporting Martin as having resigned, was in no way a deliberate measure by this club, in no way served our purposes and we have resented any suggestion that this was the case.
"Leaks (which are wholly unacceptable) and speculation accompanied the game and it is a sad and regrettable aspect that individuals get caught in their midst."
Meanwhile, Sevilla president Jose Maria Del Nido says Tottenham illegally approached Juande Ramos and he plans to report them to football's governing bodies.
Ramos quit the Spanish club on Friday evening and was named as Martin Jol's successor at Spurs the next day.
Del Nido told the Sunday Express: "If Spurs wanted Ramos they had to speak to me, but they approached him directly.
"They have acted incorrectly and I shall report them to Fifa and Uefa to defend my rights."

The paper says that Sevilla are asking for 3.3m in compensation from the White Hart Lane club.
Leeds chairman Ken Bates was also unhappy about the way Spurs have pursued his assistant manager Gus Poyet.
Bates says he first learned of the news from a report on television.
"I was watching the Uefa Cup ties on Thursday when Sky told me my assistant manager was off to Spurs. What's that all about?" he said.
