Tottenham failed to buy Barnes (left) or sell Mido |
Tottenham failed with a last-gasp bid to sign Derby midfielder Giles Barnes and could not agree a deal to sell striker Mido, BBC Sport understands. Barnes, 18, was not in the Derby squad for their midweek match at Burnley, but talks with Premiership Spurs broke down before a deal could be reached.
Manchester City wanted to sign Egypt striker Mido but were not prepared to match Tottenham's 4.5m asking price.
Mido scored for Spurs in their Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal on Wednesday.
His goal took the semi-final second-leg tie to extra-time but his team eventually lost 3-1.
The 23-year-old spent the period between January 2005 and June 2006 on loan at Spurs from Italian side Roma.
He signed permanently for the London club in August 2006 - but any move to City ended when the Manchester club would not offer more than 4m.
Barnes came through the youth ranks at Derby and is a regular for the Championship leaders.
