Tottenham's Pedro Mendes says linesman Rob Lewis' error at Old Trafford has robbed him of a "special" moment. TV replays showed the midfielder's long-range strike was fumbled over the goal-line by Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll on Tuesday.
Lewis ruled it out but Mendes said: "It was a perfectly good goal and the ball clearly crossed the line.
"It would have been a superb goal and something to remember, scoring the winner at Old Trafford in that way."
Former United midfielder David Beckham scored with a similar effort against Wimbledon in 1996 and Mendes says he could also have carved out a place in folklore.
The former Porto star added: "It would have been a fantastic goal. Beckham scored with a lob like that and it would have been great. "I don't score many goals and it would have been something special for me and the team.
"I feel sad because we should have had three points."
But Lewis defended his decision, saying: "The Spurs player shot from distance and I was doing my primary job which was to stand in line with the last defender and watch for an offside.
"There was nothing I could have done differently apart from run faster than Linford Christie."
