Sheringham, who left Spurs for Manchester United four years ago, returns after failing to agree a new deal at Old Trafford.

United would only offer their leading scorer a one-year deal, while Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle was happy to agree a two-year term.

Sheringham revealed that he had agreed to move, despite a last-ditch attempt by Sir Alex Ferguson to persuade him to stay at Old Trafford.

"It was a very big decision, especially as Sir Alex wanted me to stay.

"But Daniel Levy (Spurs' non-executive director) convinced me it was the right move.

"There was a lot to take into consideration but it is good to be back.

"The aim is to win something."

Sheringham spent five seasons at White Hart Lane, making 197 appearances and scoring 98 goals.

He quit after he fell out with former chairman Alan Sugar and became a fans' favourite at Old Trafford.

Having failed to win a trophy in his first season at Old Trafford, Sheringham has since won three successive Premiership winners medals and scored goals in the 1999 FA and Champions League finals as United recorded their historic treble.

He signed a one-year extension to his original contract last summer and rewarded United with a string of outstanding displays which saw him win both PFA and Footballer Writers' player of the year.

Another deal agreed

But Sheringham, who scored 21 goals this season, found his Old Trafford place under increasing pressure with the �19m signing of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Moving back to London enables Sheringham to be closer to his teenage son, Charlie.

Spurs have also reached an agreement to sign Yugoslav defender Goran Bunjevcevic from Red Star Belgrade for a fee in the region of �5m.

The 27-year-old has passed a medical but will not complete his move until next month.

By then he will have played two more international matches and become eligible to receive a work permit.
