Official confirmation of his new appointment was due to take place on Thursday but has been delayed. The one issue still to be settled is the amount of compensation payable to the south coast side. Hoddle resigned as Southampton boss on Tuesday and looks set to sign a five-year contract at White Hart Lane. "I have been speaking with Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe," Hoddle's agent Dennis Roach said. "The clubs are talking on an amicable basis and hope to come to a satisfactory conclusion very soon." Hoddle will not take up his duties officially until Monday, which means his first game in charge of Spurs will be the FA Cup semi-final against great rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford a week on Sunday.
David Pleat, Tottenham's director of football, will remain in the manager's chair for this weekend's Premiership clash against the Gunners. John Gorman, Hoddle's assistant at the Dell, has also quit Southampton and will take up the same position at White Hart Lane. Southampton chairman Lowe said that Hoddle informed him he was returning to White Hart Lane in a phone call on Tuesday night. "I received a phone call from Glenn saying he wished to end his employment at Southampton with immediate effect and join Tottenham Hotspur as their manager," Lowe said. Big money The former England boss is believed to have agreed a 6m deal with Spurs, who sacked George Graham earlier this month. He was a huge favourite with the club's fans during his playing days at White Hart Lane. On Tuesday, BBC Sport Online revealed that Hoddle was in talks with Tottenham.
It is understood he had an escape clause in his Southampton contract that allowed him to join another club willing to pay the Saints 800,000 compensation. Tottenham's owners Enic had said it was unlikely that a replacement for Graham would be revealed before the end of the season. Hoddle has only just returned from a family holiday in South Africa, but he was immediately installed as favourite to succeed Graham. Another former England manager, Kevin Keegan, has been installed as favourite to take over at Southampton. | See also: Other top Tottenham Hotspur stories: Links to top Tottenham Hotspur stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||
