![]() | Saturday, 24 February, 2001, 17:08 GMT Sugar relieved to step down ![]() Sugar (l) will keep his seats in the Spurs stand Sir Alan Sugar, who has confirmed that he will step down as chairman of Tottenham Hotspur next Wednesday, says leaving the role will be a huge relief. Sugar sold his 29% controlling interest in Spurs to investment group Enic and the new owners are expected to name his successor as chairman on Wednesday. "This is a weight off my shoulders quite honestly but if the new regime want any advice and help from me I'll willingly give it," he said. "I am resigning as director as well but I'll still be supporting the club home and away.
"I'll still keep my seats upstairs in the stand," said Sugar, who had been chairman for ten years. "It is not such an emotional day for me because that was really in December when I made the decision to go. "It was at the Arsenal match here and the period between then and now has just been all the financial nonsense that goes with a public company changing hands. "Hindsight is a great word and if you could re-run through the years there are things you would have done differently. "So there are lots of regrets but you never have a crystal ball." 'Special effort' Sugar, who cited fans' abuse as his reason for selling up, revealed: "I've had a constant flow of letters from supporters. "I wouldn't say it was in the thousands but they were mostly very complimentary and I appreciate that. "It takes a special effort for somebody to actually sit down and write something to you. "A lot has been done in my 10 years here. There's been a big transformation of the stadium and I'll accept that as my hallmark if you like. "Now I'll just come back here as a supporter of the club." | Other top Tottenham Hotspur stories: Links to top Tottenham Hotspur stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
