Torquay United striker Scott Rendell claims the Gulls have been unlucky in front of goal during the opening month of the season.

The 22-year-old joined Torquay on a season-long loan in July and has played in every game so far this term.

Rendell told BBC Spotlight: "We haven't seen anything really that we should be scared of in this league so far.

"But we just haven't been getting that extra bit of luck that you sometimes get in football."

The Gulls are currently 17th in League Two with six points after six games.

"Obviously results haven't been as good or what we would have hoped for, but I think the boys are still full of confidence," Rendell added.

The ex-Peterborough man was on loan with Cambridge in the Conference last season and so, like the majority of Torquay's squad, is having to contend with the step up to League Two football.

"As Exeter showed last year it's not that big a step if you adapt quickly," said Rendell. "We've adapted well but just haven't had that little bit of luck.

"We need to score a few more goals and that's down to myself and the other strikers to start hitting the back of the net and taking the pressure of the defence a little bit."

Rendell has already scored twice this season with the ambitious striker keen to keep increasing that tally.

"Two goals is not a bad return, it probably could be a little bit better but we've got a long way to go yet, so if I take my chances when I get them I'll be more than happy."

On Saturday, the Gulls travel north to Rochdale who have also had an indifferent start to the season, picking up eight points from their first six games.

"It's going to be a tough game," Rendell said. "Rochdale have been a very good side in this league for a couple of years at least."
