Boss Leroy Rosenior was in jubilant mood after Torquay secured automatic promotion with a win over Southend. "This is the best thing I've ever felt in football," said Rosenior.
"It's satisfying after two years work - to go up automatically. It's the best thing I've ever achieved. And people told me not to take the job!
"The way we play is better suited to a higher level - I don't believe it will take a lot of changes - we've got a great group of players."
Torquay beat Huddersfield, who drew at Cheltenham, to the third promotion slot by virtue of goal difference.
Rosenior added: "That was the longest 10 minutes of my life at the end. Some decisions went our way, but who cares - we're up. That's all that matters.
"We deserve to go up. It's great to be going up automatically because I feel we were in the top three this year. And the league table doesn't lie.
"I'm so pleased for everyone connected with the club - small clubs have as much desire for success as anyone else. We may be small but we've got big hearts.
"It's a massive relief for me because I've been telling people we could do it, and now we have."
