Edgar turned down the chance to join Manchester United as a youngster

Swansea City have signed Burnley defender David Edgar on loan until the end of the season.

The Canadian Under-20 international who can play at centre-back or left-back goes straight into the squad to face Blackpool on Tuesday.

Premier League strugglers Burnley do have the option of recalling the 22-year-old after 28 days of the loan.

Edgar has made six appearances for the Clarets this season including defeats to Manchester United and Chelsea.

"I think it's a great chance for David to get some games because he's obviously frustrated," said Burnley boss Brian Laws.

"He wants to be in the team just as much as anybody else.

"I can't fit him in at this moment in time David is very much in our thoughts and I think getting him first-team games with Swansea, who are playing really good football and in a position where they are winning consistently, is a fantastic opportunity."

Ontario-born Edgar left Canada at 14 to join the Newcastle United Academy, after turning down an earlier opportunity to join Man Utd.

He began making regular appearances for the reserves during the 2005-06 season and captained the side before being was called up to the first team midway through the following season.

He made his first team debut for Newcastle away at Bolton on Boxing Day 2006, and marked his home debut in style, scoring his first goal for the club with a long range strike against Manchester United in a 2-2 draw.

Renowned for being a good leader, Edgar made 13 appearances, including seven starts, at St James' Park last season, scoring one goal as the Magpies were relegated to the Championship.

He rejected a new contract last summer to join Burnley on a four-year deal for an initial £300,000 fee, with Birmingham also interested.

He made his debut for Burnley in the second round of the Carling Cup against Hartlepool in August, but then found himself out of favour under then-manager Owen Coyle.

After Coyle's departure to Bolton in January, Edgar was included in the starting line-up of Brian Laws' first match in charge against Manchester United, a 3-0 defeat. He has since made another start and two substitute appearances.

Edgar, whose father Eddie played in goal for Newcastle and Hartlepool, received his first call-up to the full Canada squad in August 2008 against Iceland, but did not feature in the game.
