Swansea chief fears player loss

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins admits he cannot guarantee some of the club's top players will be there at the start of the season.

With manager Roberto Martinez set to be named Wigan boss on Wednesday, stars such as Ferrie Bodde, Angel Rangel and Jason Scotland could also depart.

"It's going to be difficult to say, I cannot hide from that," Jenkins told BBC Sport Wales.

"The way football has gone over the last few years, I think money talks."

Martinez has said on a number of occasions that at least six of his first-team squad were capable of playing in the Premier League.

And with the Spaniard about to start life in the top flight, he could be tempted to try and raid his soon-to-be former club.

Wigan have a much bigger budget than Swansea and could afford the transfer fees some of the players would attract, as well as offering much higher wages.

"For me personally, football is not moving in the right direction," said Jenkins.

"Money seems to be making a lot of decisions for people so we've got a big task on our hands to keep everything together, but I always felt it was going to be like that.

"I'm not sure how things will develop. It's very, very difficult to say.

"I think we've obviously got to do one thing at a time, get the [new] manager in, assess the situation and when the players come back we will speak to them and start the process to make sure everybody is comfortable."

Whoever becomes Swansea's next manager is also likely to have to bring in his own management team, with Martinez wanting to take his assistant Graeme Jones and chief scout Kevin Reeves to the JJB Stadium.

"As things stand, that's what Roberto has clearly said," Jenkins added.

"I can't hide the fact I would love to keep as many staff as possible to get continuity and keep things ticking over.

"That could be essential and things like that will be an ongoing conversation over the next week or two."
