Martinez targeting Cardiff scalp

Swansea boss Roberto Martinez
Swansea boss Roberto Martinez has faith in his players

Swansea boss Roberto Martinez says he will field a strong side for the Carling Cup clash with arch-rivals Cardiff despite their league priority.

A late goal from Ferrie Bodde earned a 1-1 draw for Swansea against Burnley in the Championship on Saturday.

Now Martinez can turn his attention to the visit of the Bluebirds on Tuesday.

"Whoever is going to play it will be a team that I believe is good enough to beat anyone on the day, it'll be a fantastic football occasion," he said.

"It's something that everyone connected to Swansea City had to wait a long time.

"Now we have to be very proud to have that derby in an important third round of the Carling Cup at our new Liberty Stadium."

The cup game is the first fully-fledged Welsh derby for nine years at this level and is the first of three meetings this season between Championship rivals Cardiff and Swansea.

Martinez realises that the games are now starting to come thick and fast but believes his players are up to the task.

"It (the match against Burnley) was our third game in seven days and now we're going to have a period of five games in 14 days and that makes huge demands," Martinez added.

"That's why we've got a big squad, a talented squad, so in situations like this the competition is important and I want to use every single member in the squad."
