Swans star Scotland's fitness bid

Roberto Martinez admits star striker Jason Scotland is facing a race against time to be fit for their Championship opener at Charlton on Saturday.

Scotland was Swansea's top-scorer in their League One title campaign but is recovering after stomach operation.

Scotland, scorer of 29 goals last season, played 62 minutes in Swansea's friendly win over Den Haag on Tuesday.

Martinez said: "He's got a chance to be involved but you could see that he isn't at the level to play 90 minutes."

The Trinidad and Tobago international topped League One's scoring charts last term and Scotland will be key to Swansea maintaining their Championship status.

The 29-year-old has made a speedy recover from his operation and could make Swansea's substitutes bench at The Valley on Saturday.

"We're delighted with Jason's progress," said Swans manager Martinez.

"I don't think that anybody thought he would have played an hour against Den Haag and he came through with no problems.

"Over the next two to three days we'll see how he's progressing in his fitness and hopefully there'll be no reaction.

"We'll keep an eye on him and see if he's okay for Saturday.

"Charlton is not our final, our final is the 10 month competition we have in the Championship so we need every player ready to play their role - and that's what I'm interested in.

"I'm interested in to see who's going to be in the first eleven at Charlton, I'm interested in the boys that are going to play a massive role for Swansea City this season."

Fellow forward Gorka Pintado is also set to miss the Charlton clash as Martinez looks set to start with Febian Brandy and Guillem Bauza up front at The Valley.
