Martinez's team have broken Swansea's club record for points

Roberto Martinez says Swansea's refusal to compromise their playing values won them promotion to the league's second tier for the first time in 24 years.

"We've waited a long time, but we've got to the Championship in style," the Swans manager told BBC Sport Wales.

"If we'd played a basic game we'd be a mid-table League One side.

"We play pretty football, but we're also strong, determined and play for each other, that's been the secret of our success this season."

Saturday's 2-1 win at Gillingham saw the Swans set a club record of 86 points for the season, beating the 85 of John Hollins' 1999-2000 side.

They are seven points clear of second-placed Carlisle with three to play, and could clinch the League One title next Saturday.

Martinez was, to many, a shock appointment when he took over from the more conservative Kenny Jackett at the Liberty Stadium in February 2007, but he has exceeded expectations.

"League One is a very hard division, but we set the pace of the league and we're getting just reward for an enjoyable season," said the Spaniard, 34.

"We don't play a percentage game and some of our football has been special.

"Now it's time to focus on the visit of Yeovil next Saturday.

"Promotion was the most important thing to take the club onto the next level, but you don't get many chances to win a title as a club or as a player, we have a unique opportunity."
