Tate did not expect to take a penalty as he had a dead leg |
After hitting the winning strike in the penalties win over Walsall, Swansea centre-back Alan Tate was keen to deflect the praise elsewhere. "It wasn't just me, (Swansea keeper) Willy Gueret made some great saves," said Tate after firing his team to the LDV Vans Trophy Southern Section final.
Swansea had twice gone ahead in normal time and missed three penalties to win the game before Tate's strike.
"I've got confidence at penalties, if I hit it right it's going in," said Tate.
"I'd suffered a dead leg in the game and that was why I wasn't one of the first five to take a spot kick.
"But I hobbled up and we're through to the section final.
"Colchester will be a big test, but we have a real chance to go on and win the Cup."
Tate's manager Kenny Jackett was delighted to come through a testing encounter.
"We could have wrapped it up in normal time, but Walsall keep playing and create chances, and they hit us with two quality strikes," said Jackett.
"We do practice penalties regularly and have players who are ready to take on the responsibility.
"But we don't like doing things the easy way, what a time to be a football manager!
"We're just delighted to get to the area final, Colchester are a good side and it will be a quality match."
