Sunderland forward Fraizer Campbell will miss six months of the season due to the serious knee injury he sustained against Manchester City on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Campbell was injured in a tackle with City defender Micah Richards in Sunderland's 1-0 win.
"He has ruptured his cruciate knee ligaments so he's going to be out for at least six months," said Sunderland manager Steve Bruce. "It's a tragedy."
Campbell joined Sunderland for £3.5m from Manchester United in July 2009.
The England under-21 star previously had loan spells at Hull City and Tottenham before eventually joining the Black Cats.
"Fraizer will be back. He's a larger-than-life character," added Bruce.
"He was just starting to show what he was about. But make no mistake he'll be back and he'll be firing again."
