Ferdinand joined Sunderland in 2008 after five years at West Ham
Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand may be sidelined for at least a month because of an ankle injury.
The 24-year-old former West Ham centre-half was hurt after a challenge from Fulham striker Erik Nevland during Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.
"Nevland's body weight came down on the ankle when they went to ground and he has no chance for the weekend," manager Steve Bruce told the Sunderland Echo.
"It's a nasty one and it looks like it could be a month at least for him."
The Black Cats are already struggling with injuries and suspensions ahead of Saturday's home fixture with Portsmouth.
Kieran Richardson and Phil Bardsley are both suspended, George McCartney is battling with a hamstring injury and John Mensah is sidelined because of a calf problem.
