Richardson joined Sunderland from Manchester United in July 2007
Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson says the Black Cats can be happy with their performance despite their League Cup defeat by Aston Villa on Tuesday.
After Kenwyne Jones had a penalty saved, the tie was goalless at the end of extra time, with the Wearsiders losing 3-1 on spot kicks.
"Villa are a top side but the players at Sunderland matched them," Richardson told BBC Newcastle.
"We've got good coaches here. We'll be fine for West Ham on Saturday."
The tie at the Stadium of Light handed Richardson a rare opportunity to impress in his favoured central-midfield position, having spent much of this season playing at left-back.
"The gaffer [Steve Bruce] decides where he wants to play me, I respect his decision," added the former Manchester United man.
"He's been in the game for a long time and where he wants me to play, I'll play. I feel can play anywhere and good players can play anywhere.
"Wherever I can play I'll do a good job for Sunderland."
