Goal boosts Sunderland's Campbell

Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell believes netting his first goal in Tuesday's 2-0 win at home to Birmingham can kick-start his career on Wearside.

Campbell, 22, has started four of Sunderland's eight matches this season and hopes the strike can aid in his quest for a starting berth.

"It was great to get out there and get on the scoresheet. We've been working hard," he told BBC Newcastle.

"I can relax now and concentrate on football and goals will come."

Huddersfield-born Campbell joined Sunderland from Premier League champions Manchester United for £3.5m during the summer, having failed to earn a first team place at Old Trafford.

Naturally a striker, the England under-21 international has seen himself operating on the right flank as a wide-man for Black Cats' boss Steve Bruce, but says he is just happy to be playing for a stable club after loan spells with Hull City and Tottenham.

"I'm just trying to stay on the pitch as long as I can, whether I'm on the left, or on the right I'll do that, and I'm happy to do that for the team," he said.

Campbell is hopeful of a start for Sunderland's Premier League visit of Wolves on Sunday.
