Bruce interest a boost - Campbell

Fraizer Campbell
Sunderland are Campbell's fourth professional club

Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell has revealed manager Steve Bruce's interest in him was a key factor in his opting to join the club during the summer.

Campbell, 21, signed for the Black Cats from Manchester United for £3.5m after failing to nail down a place and said making a fresh start has been a relief.

"I want to prove myself here," he told BBC Newcastle.

"It's a confidence boost knowing the manager brought me here and I'm in his plans," the former Hull loanee added.

Sunderland are Campbell's fourth club since he signed professional terms with Manchester United as a teenager, having also enjoyed loan spells with Hull City and Tottenham.

And the Huddersfield-born striker, who swapped life at Old Trafford for the North East, can see vast potential at the Stadium of Light to become a key player in the Premier League.

"It's got massive potential, there's loads of fans, great fans, you can't walk down the street without seeing somebody in a Sunderland shirt," he said.

"Look at the facilities here, look at the training ground, the new owners here, the managers got the backing, there's a lot of potential and I hope we can fulfil that."

The England Under-21 international has made five appearances for the Wearsiders this season.
