Sunderland striker David Connolly has undergone a second operation as he continues his recovery from injury.
The 31-year-old Republic of Ireland international had surgery on a groin problem in Germany last week, the club has confirmed.
Connolly has also had hip surgery as he seeks a return to action for the first time since January.
Manager Roy Keane says he is hopeful this latest operation will enable Connolly to resume his career.
Connolly was one of six players to be brought in by Keane on the final day of the transfer window in 2006.
He has scored 13 goals in 42 appearances for the club, and now has under a year remaining on his contract.
