Sunderland defender Nyron Nosworthy could be sidelined for up to four weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the Carling Cup win over Northampton.
The 27-year-old, who has been an ever-present this season, also struggled with a hamstring injury last year, missing eight games as a result.
Manager Roy Keane was fiercely critical of his team after the Northampton game.
He described the result as "feeling like a defeat" because of what he saw as a lack of application from his team.
