Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson has admitted he needs to get matches under his belt if he is to show fans his best form. The England cap, 23, has struggled with injuries since arriving at the Stadium of Light and is desperate to stake a regular place in the side.
He told BBC Radio Newcastle: "Playing in this league you need to be fit.
"I need match fitness to get there. I'm going to be in the gym, working hard and hopefully get my fitness back."
Having helped West Bromwich Albion to survive the drop in 2005, Richardson is no stranger to life at the bottom of the table.

"The effort is always there with Sunderland, the gaffer always says 'Give the effort, it's what the fans want'.
"No team is too big to go down, but the main thing is for us not to go down.
"The players we've got and the hard work we put in, I'm sure it won't be us."
