The 32-year-old former Newcastle left-back has been training with the Black Cats and boss Niall Quinn said: "Robbie has impressed around the place.

"But we have both agreed that we will learn a lot more about his future prospects at the club during what is a demanding first month of the season.

"Robbie is eligible to play for the first team and, for the time being, let's see what the next month brings."
