Premiership strugglers Sunderland have signed midfielder Rory Delap from Championship side Southampton on a free transfer, reports BBC Radio Newcastle. Delap, who has been capped 11 times by the Republic of Ireland, has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Sunderland.
The 29-year-old was Saints' record signing when he joined the club from Derby County for 4m in July 2001.
However, he would not have featured against Middlesbrough on Tuesday anyway because of an Achilles injury.
