Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy was happy to see his players bounce back from the FA Cup semi-final defeat at Wimbledon. McCarthy admitted: "I wasn't sure how my players would react in the light of Sunday's defeat.
"We're still aiming to finish in the top two. We hope to keep winning and pick up points. Norwich and West Brom still have to visit us.
"All credit to Wimbledon - they made it hard for us - but ultimately the job has been done and we got three points."
He added: "There will be sympathy for Stuart Murdoch throughout the football community as everyone's aware of the impossible conditions he's had to work under."
Marcus Stewart and Darren Byfield netted either side of half-time to boost Sunderland's promotion push and send rock-bottom Wimbledon crashing into Division Two for the first time in 20 years.
