Stoke new boy Peter Sweeney will miss the start of the season after fracturing the base of his back. The 20-year-old suffered the injury after just 15 minutes of the friendly against Newcastle Town and is expected to be sidelined for up to three months.
The former Millwall midfielder said he was "gutted" on hearing the news after initially harbouring hopes of playing in Friday's friendly at Shrewsbury.
On the plus side, Kevin Harper and John Eustace are nearing playing returns.
