Mehmet extends Love Street stay
Billy Mehmet
Mehmet hopes to score many more goals for St Mirren
St Mirren striker Billy Mehmet has agreed a contract extension that will see him stay at Love Street until 2010.

The 24-year-old has scored 12 goals since joining the club from Dunfermline in 2005 and is the club's current top-scorer this season.

"Obviously I am delighted to have signed a new deal for the next two-and-a-half years," he said.

"It gives me security but I was happy to sign it because this is a club I enjoy playing for."

Injury and illness meant a slow start to his Buddies career, but Mehmet believes the Love Street faithful have finally been able to see the best of him this term.

"I feel that this season has been my best for the club. I've enjoyed a good run in the side and I've got a decent tally of goals," he added.

"I believe this club is going to go onto better things and I want to be part of it.

"We are a club on the up. Last season we avoided relegation and that was our aim.

"This season we are looking to finish higher and I am sure we can do that with the squad the manager is putting together."

Mehmet wants to toast his new deal with a goal against SPL champions Celtic when they roll in to Paisley on Sunday, especially after last week's 4-0 reverse at Falkirk.

"I would like to get a goal against Celtic but the team getting a result is far more important than me getting a goal," he said.

"We know it'll be a hard game, we were disappointed with the way we played against Falkirk last weekend and we know we can do better.

"We're up against one of the best teams in the league but we're confident we can get something.

"We've been on a good run, before the Falkirk game, we've got to the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup, so we've done well since the beginning of this year."
