Southport have signed up striker Lee Ashcroft as their new player-coach. The 30-year-old, who has played for West Bromwich Albion, Preston, and Grimsby has just been released by Division Two leaders Wigan.
Ashcroft is expected to make his Southport debut at Haig Road against promotion-chasing Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
Southport boss Mick Walsh wanted to boost his squad as they go in search of their first Conference win since November and their first since Walsh took charge.
Ashcroft, who has started over 300 League games, has plenty of experience in front of goal, scoring 75 goals in his career.
Meanwhile, former Bolton and Burnley defender Mark Winstanley has now left the club because of work commitments.
The 35-year-old had played 26 games for the Sandgrounders since joining the club from Carlisle United last summer.
