Clarke could soon be sitting at the negotiating table at Roots Hall

Southend United are hoping to hold talks with central defender Peter Clarke about a new contract.

The 27-year-old's current deal expires this summer and Blues chairman Ron Martin is keen to keep him at the club.

Martin told the club's website that Clarke had not turned down the opportunity to discuss a new deal.

"There have been no discussions with Peter about him renewing his contract since September 2008. Hopefully we can have formal discussions soon," he said.
