Clarke hails new Southend players

Southend United defender Peter Clark says the club's new players are already fitting in well.

Clarke scored the winning goal in the club's opening-day victory over Peterborough, which featured five of Steve Tilson's summer signings.

Clark told BBC Essex: "We've had one or two new bodies in the last week.

"But because we've got a small squad there's a good spirit and all of the lads are enjoying it and feeling a part of it, so hopefully we can kick on."

The Blues defender scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute and was delighted to get their League One campaign off to an ideal start.

"Obviously we wanted to get off to a good start and we played some good stuff," he said.

"I don't think there were many clear-cut chances through the game, and it was just a case of being on the spot at the right time."

The Essex side will be looking to get their Carling Cup campaign off to a similar start when they host Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night.
