Southend have signed Brentford goalkeeper Clark Masters on a free transfer - then immediately sent him on loan to Stevenage Borough. The 20-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Roots Hall, but will spend the rest of the season on loan at Broadhall Way.
Masters had made just 16 first-team appearances for Brentford.
Meanwhile, Southend are pondering whether to make an offer to re-sign Luton striker Dean Morgan, 24.
Morgan recently had an 11-game loan spell at Roots Hall, but returned to Luton earlier this month - only to see a proposed move to Leeds fall through after he failed to agree personal terms there.
"Dean is in the background. His last game was his best for us," Shrimpers assistant boss Paul Brush told BBC Essex.
"There aren't too many wide men with pace available. Dean's on our list but not at the top of it."
