Terry Paine played in the 1966 group stages

Southampton legend Terry Paine is finally set to receive a World Cup winners' medal for his role in England's triumph in 1966.

Paine appeared in the group stages against Mexico but missed out on an appearance in the final victory against West Germany.

A special ceremony will be held at 10 Downing Street on Wednesday.

Paine said:"I guess it is better late than never, but we're talking about 43 years ago or so."

Paine, who has flown in from South Africa, will join 10 other members of Sir Alf Ramsey's squad in getting the belated accolade.

"Players like myself, Ian Callaghan, John Connelly and Jimmy Greaves actually played in the games leading up to the final, so it will be nice for us all to get a medal too," Paine added.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown will present Paine with his medal and Football Association Chairman Lord Triesman will also attend the ceremony.

The medal winners will be guests of honour at Wembley on Wednesday evening when England face Andorra in their latest 2009 World Cup qualifier.

Paine made a record-breaking 811 appearances in a Southampton shirt.
