Saints get Spurs defender on loan
Phil Ifil
Ifil has only made one Premier League appearance since 2004
Southampton have signed Tottenham full-back Phil Ifil on loan.

The 20-year-old has joined Saints for an initial three-month spell, and has signed in time to join the squad for Saturday's game at Sheffield United.

Ifil has made just five first-team appearances for Spurs, but had two loan spells at Millwall during 2005/06.

"He will add to our defensive options - that is an area where we need to be stronger," Southampton boss George Burley told his club's website.

"It is a good chance to bring in a promising Premiership player and to assess him."

Ifil was handed his Premier League debut by former Tottenham boss Jacques Santini against Liverpool on the opening day of the 2004/05 season.

But after playing against Newcastle the following week, he had to wait until April this year for his next league game for Spurs.

He is the third new defender to arrive at St Mary's within a week, following Christian Dailly's loan move and free agent Lucien Mettomo's arrival.
