Saints chairman Lowe has been criticised by supporters |
Property tycoon Michael Wilde has increased his holding in Southampton to 4,638,470 shares. The 53-year-old now owns a 16.51% stake in parent company Southampton Leisure Holdings plc and is looking to increase his shareholding to 18%.
It is understood that Wilde will be considered for a place on the club's board at the end of the current season.
A club statement said he had visited St Mary's and intended to "understand all the day-to-day running of the club."
The lifelong fan's plans for the club are as yet unclear as his previous shareholding would have been enough for him to call an extraordinary general meeting.
Current chairman Rupert Lowe has himself purchased a further 100,000 shares to take his holding up to 6.69%.
The statement continued: "Mr Wilde has confirmed he intends to take a close and ongoing interest in the activities of the club with a view to securing both stability and growth over the coming seasons.
"He has been extremely complimentary about the quality and commitment of staff and most aspects of the business.
"He has highlighted areas where he believes improvements can be made."
