Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe says Dave Bassett and Dennis Wise are among the front runners to replace Harry Redknapp as manager. The caretaker managers will remain in charge of the first team for Saturday's Championship trip to Norwich.
The duo guided Saints to a 1-0 win over Luton on Sunday, their first victory in six games.
"They will be among the main contenders but the board are looking at all the options," Lowe told the club website.
However, Lowe said he would not be rushed into making a decision about Redknapp's replacement.
He said: "I had a long chat with Dave and Dennis after the Luton game, which was a very important win for us.
"We will not rush into it. We will work to our own timetable and no-one else's as it is a crucial appointment and we have to get it right.
"We have not decided whether it will be internal or external - all options remain open."
The Saints are currently 12th in the Coca-Cola Championship but only three points off a play-off place.
