Southampton have signed Olivier Bernard from Newcastle for an undisclosed fee - believed to be 400,000. The 25-year-old French full-back has agreed a five-month deal and will then consider his options in the summer.
And Saints assistant boss Jim Smith told the club's website: "Bernard is a quality left-sided player.
"He has had a fall-out over his contract at Newcastle and has become available. He is a player manager Harry Redknapp has always admired."
Newcastle recently signed Celestine Babayaro from Chelsea, prompting Bernard to say he is being forced out.
His grievance was that he was not paid as much as other players, despite being offered a four-year deal worth 5.5m.
Redknapp moved for Bernard after a bid for Nottingham Forest midfielder Andy Reid collapsed.
