Southampton have completed the signing of Torquay's teenage defender Mike Williamson for a initial fee believed to be in the region of �100,000.

A number of Premiership clubs moved for the 18-year-old when Southampton's interest was revealed.

But the Gulls' star was impressed by the south coast club's set-up and celebrated his Saints move with a goal in the reserves' 4-3 friendly win at Rushden & Diamonds.

Gulls owner Mike Bateson confirmed: "Mike has now joined Southampton and started with a goal, which is a good way to begin."
