Steve Leslie missed a second-half penalty as Shrewsbury drew 0-0 with Coventry at the Greenhous Meadow.
Jake Robinson was pushed in the box, but Leslie's spot-kick was weak and easily saved by Keiren Westwood.
"It's not the result that's important, rather the quality of play, the fitness and movement of players," boss Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire.
Ian Sharps captained the side for the first time, while Turner remained tight-lipped about trialist Dan Smith.
Town's new signings were on show at home for the first time, with striker Mat Harrold impressive.
"We're slowly developing quite a reasonable squad," Turner added.
