Former Preston boss Paul Simpson would be interested in the vacant managerial post at Shrewsbury Town, BBC Radio Shropshire understands.

It is believed Simpson admires the ambition of the club and the job is one he would be interested in.

It is also understood that the club only has a very small list of candidates for the post.

Gary Peters left the Shrews by mutual consent on Monday after Town slipped to 16th in League Two.

Simpson was sacked from his job at Preston in November after winning just three league games all season.

He also led his hometown club Carlisle to back-to-back promotions after taking over in 2003.
