Ryan Esson - paid off by the Shrews |
Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Ryan Esson has been released by the club after having his contract paid up. Esson spent most of the season in the reserves having been unable to oust Glyn Garner from between the sticks.
"I don't think I've been given the chance to prove myself, so I've got to look after my career," the 27-year-old keeper told BBC Radio Shropshire.
"I'm sorry to be leaving, but there's a lot more to Ryan Esson than the Shrewsbury fans have seen."
Esson battled back from a serious facial injury, but found himself second choice to Garner at the start of the season.
Consequently his first-team outings have been restricted to friendlies and infrequent cup games.
"I am genuinely sorry to leave," he added, "but that's the way football goes."
