Wood nears new deal
Sheffield Wednesday defender Richard Wood is set to sign a two-year professional contract at Hillsborough this week.

The Owls youngster is currently in his second year with the club's youth academy.

But he has impressed manager Chris Turner with his performances for the reserves.

And he is expected to break into the first team within the next 18 months.

The 17-year-old centre-back has 12 months left with the academy, but is expected to agree terms which will keep him at Wednesday for at least a further two years.

"Richard's likely to sign his first professional contract by the end of the week," said a Wednesday spokesman.

"He's currently in his second year with the academy and has been offered a two-year deal."
