Scunthorpe swoop for Stockport captain Michael Raynes

Michael Raynes
Stockport once turned down a bid from Liverpool for the central defender

Scunthorpe have completed the signing of Stockport captain Michael Raynes for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old became the Iron's third signing of the transfer window in a deal that was completed moments before the 1700 GMT deadline.

The central defender has been at Stockport since 2004, and was once the subject of a bid by Liverpool.

Raynes admitted: "We pushed it until the last minute but it's good to finally get it done."

He added: "It's been in the pipeline for a while and it's taken time to sort out but I can't wait to meet the rest of the lads.

"I came for my first proper look at the club on Monday. I met the gaffer Nigel Adkins and I'm delighted to be here.

"It's a sad day for me to leave Stockport County but I think I've served my time there.

"I'd like to thank everyone for all they've done for me while I was there.

"This is a new chapter in my life now and I'm looking forward to starting."
