Byrne is ready for both club and country |
Scunthorpe defender Cliff Byrne is ready to play twice inside the pace of 24 hours to help the Iron's bid to pick up three points at Boston on Saturday. Byrne is set to captain the Republic of Ireland Under-21s in their European Championship qualifier against Russia on Friday night.
And the former Sunderland man then plans to fly back from Ireland for Scunthorpe's game at York Street the following day.
"He is going to bust a gut to get to our game," said manager Brian Laws.
"We will assess him and if he feels fit I may even play him. It will be that close.
"I need everybody at the moment and Cliff is prepared to play if he is feeling fine.
"It is credit to him and it is good for the football club that a player is prepared to stick his neck out and play two games in two days," Laws told his club's website.
Byrne, 21, has been an ever-present for Scunthorpe so far this season.
