Rushden & Diamonds caretaker manager Justin Edinburgh has praised young striker Sam Smith.

The 18-year-old is the Diamonds' top scorer this season with eight goals, despite only starting six games.

Edinburgh told BBC Radio Northampton: "He is a fantastic prospect for this football club.

"We are doing a lot of work with him but I just don't feel at this present time he is ready to start a game. So much is expected of him."

He continued: "We can't become reliant on him. His physical attributes are great but I don't think he uses them to his strength.

"I don't think he wins enough in the air. His understanding when to come short and when to go long is improving, he is learning the game. Next year will be a big year for him."
