Howard joined the Royals from Sheffield United in the summer

Reading midfielder Brian Howard will have surgery on a broken jaw on Monday and may miss a month or more of action.

Howard was injured during Reading's 2-1 defeat at Derby on Saturday.

Reading physio Jon Fearn told the club website: "He's fractured his jaw and he's having surgery to put stabilising plates in.

"It's difficult to say how long he will be out. Under normal circumstances it's four to six weeks before you're allowed contact but it could be sooner."

Howard joined Reading at the start of this season from Sheffield United.
