Rangers forward Steven Naismith was pleased to get this season's Champions League campaign off to a start with a hard-fought draw at Manchester United.

Walter Smith's side set out with a defensive formation at Old Trafford to secure a point in the goalless draw.

"I'm delighted with a point," said Naismith. "We knew it was going to be a tough night and one that we would have to defend well, first and foremost.

"We created a few half-chances, but we're delighted with a point."

Wayne Rooney's return to a drastically-changed Manchester United side failed to inspire the English giants as Rangers put on a defiant defensive show to secure a famous result.

Sir Alex Ferguson surprisingly made 10 changes from the team that drew at Goodison Park against Everton on Saturday and they struggled to break down a dogged Rangers side.

"Our main objective was not to let in a goal," said Naismith.

"We did that and, when we went forward, we maybe didn't make the most of the breaks that we did have. But, on the whole, we're happy."

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor was rarely tested, but the visitors were similarly unthreatening at the other end. Naismith, though, was pleased that the Champions League campaign got off to a positive start.

"The defence were really good in the way that they set themselves out.

"The chances Man United did have were 25 yards out and long-range efforts. Allan had a lot of organising to do, but not a lot of saves.

"Last year, we felt our away form was good, but we were maybe just unlucky with the results, but this year we want to carry on the same way and maybe take our chances when they come.

"It's a great start and hopefully we can build on it."

Meanwhile, Rangers striker Kenny Miller was satisfied with the team performance, given the quality of the opposition, but was disappointed at not finding the net in his lone striker role.

"The performance we put in was always going to have to be the way it was - defensive," said Miller.

"We had to try and limit them to as few chances as we could and, in that sense, we did very well.

"It was a frustrating night. Any time the ball was coming forward, the lads were having to work hard from the midfield areas to get back and help.

"But we were playing Man United - they're always going to put you under pressure and have your back against the wall.

"There wasn't a lot of support for me. But we got on the ball, even if it was a bit sloppy a few times, getting the ball and giving it away.

"It's a fantastic result for us and a good start to the campaign to come to Old Trafford and get a clean sheet."
