Kris Boyd says his future at Rangers could depend on whether Walter Smith is still manager at the end of the season.

The striker's contract expires in the summer and he has yet to agree a new deal, while Smith's future at the cash-strapped Ibrox club is also unclear.

"He'll have a big influence on it," said Boyd of his contract talks.

"He's a manager I want to play under, he's shown faith in me, so I would like to keep paying him back for showing faith in me by scoring goals."

A number of clubs from around Europe have been linked with 26-year-old Boyd, including Hertha Berlin and Galatasaray.

And former Rangers manager Alex McLeish, who lured Boyd from Kilmarnock to Ibrox, has maintained an interest in taking the Scottish Premier League's top goalscorer to Birmingham City.

Boyd's future had previously been in doubt after Smith consistently left him out of the starting line-up for European ties, but he has struck a rich vein of form this season and recently surpassed former Celtic hero Henrik Larsson's goalscoring record.

"I look back on what the gaffer's done for me, even though we've had our fallouts and disagreements along the way," said Boyd.

"He's given me a chance to play at the level I'm at and, if he was here, I would be delighted with that.

"When you see the job he's done with the finances the way they are, I think it's a credit to him how well he's done the job.

"I said weeks ago that my contract would get sorted out whenever it does, but the most important thing is to go to St Johnstone and get three points."

Rangers travel to McDiarmid Park on Saturday to face St Johnstone in the Scottish Premier League with a 10-point lead over rivals Celtic at the top of the table.
